Description
Ixia is colorful and spectacular plant that demands the eye’s attention! Wiry, near-invisible stems hold up star-shaped flowers in cream, pink, magenta and deep red. The whole planting sways in the slightest breeze thus its other name, wand flower, comes into play. It’s a South African native, so it prefers full sun and soil that drains well. It’s prized as a cut flower in arrangements primarily because of its sturdy stalk and brightly colored, plentiful flowers. Ixia is considered to be Deer resistant, however, they are still prone to feeding on new tender growth in early Spring, so we always recommend spraying a non-toxic/organic deer repellent.
Ixia is winter-hardy in zones 8 through 10. In zone colder than that it isn’t likely to exhibit perennial habits or return in subsequent seasons.
